After reading the blog entries submitted by other Temasek teachers, I just had to ask Fujioka-san if I, too, could submit something. I was a teacher at Temasek many years ago (1996-1997), but I still keep in touch with Fujioka-san and his family and the happenings at Temasek. I have wonderful memories of my time teaching at Temasek and exploring Kobe, which at the time was undergoing major rebuilding and construction because of the Great Hanshin earthquake the year before. I feel very lucky to have lived in such a vibrant and interesting city.
テマセックの先生方が寄稿されたブログを読んで、私も何か書いてもいいですかと藤岡さんに尋ねました。私は何年も前（1996 – 1997）にテマセックの教師をしていましたが、今も藤岡さんや家族の皆さんと交流しており、そしてテマセックでのいろいろなことも知らせてもらっています。テマセックでの教師生活、そして神戸の街の探訪は素晴らしい思い出です。その神戸は1年前に起きた阪神淡路大震災で復興のための工事が行われていたまさにその時でした。私はそんな活気あふれた街に住むことができてとてもラッキーでした。

When I moved back to the United States, I started working for the government of a small town near San Diego, California. Soon after, I got married to Colin Goodwin (Fujioka-san and his wife attended our wedding in San Diego!). After a few years living in San Diego, Colin and I moved to Northern California so I could attend graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley. We fell in love with the Bay Area and have lived here for nearly ten years.
アメリカに帰って、カリフォルニア州サンディエゴ近くの小さな町の役場で働き始めました。すぐその後にコリン・グッドウインと結婚しました。（藤岡さん夫妻はサンディエゴでの結婚式に出席してくれました）。数年後、私たちはカリフォルニア北部に引っ越しました。それで私はカリフォルニア大学バークレー校の大学院で学ぶことができました。私たちはこのベイエリアが大好きです。そしてここに住み始めてもう10年近くになります。

Now we have two children- Tristan and Mira- who are ages 8 and 6. Colin works as a fourth grade English teacher, and I work as a researcher for the state judiciary. We live about 30 minutes from downtown San Francisco. San Francisco is a wonderful city with many unique neighborhoods and shops, and we enjoy spending weekends visiting the city. And just like the beautiful mountains behind Kobe, San Francisco has many beautiful natural areas that a short distance away from the city. We can easily go for a hike in a redwood forest, see deer, or visit the ocean (but the water is freezing!).
私たちには二人の子供がいます。トリスタンとミラで、8歳と6歳です。コリンは英語教師として4年生を教え、私は州の裁判所で調査官として働いています。私たちはサンフランシスコの中心街から30分のところに住んでいます。サンフランシスコは多くのユニークな近隣の町やショップがある素晴らしい都市で、週末にはダウンタウンへ出かけ楽しみます。そして美しい山々がある神戸と同じように、サンフランシスコにも街から少しのところに美しい自然がいっぱいあります。セコイアの森へハイキングに簡単に行けますし、鹿も見られます。また海へも行けます（ただし海水は冷たいですよ！）。

During the summers, we like to take long road trips to visit family or see the sights of the west. I’ve included a family photo of us in Ouray, Colorado. Ouray is in a region of Colorado that was famous for mining in the 19^th century, but there are very few mines still operating and the small towns in the area rely mostly on tourism. There are beautiful forests, mountains, and rivers to explore in the area.
夏の間、私たちは親族を訪ねたり西部の景色を見に長距離ドライブを楽しみます。家族写真の一枚はコロラド州のオーレイで撮ったものです。オーレイは19世紀にコロラドの鉱山地帯として有名でした。しかし今はほんの少しの鉱山でしか採掘されておらず、この地域の小さな町々はほとんどが観光に頼っています。でもこの地域を探索すると美しい森や山、川がいっぱいあります。 

I have family members who live in Tokyo, so occasionally, I have been able to visit Temasek and Fujioka-san. Temasek still has the comfortable, family atmosphere that I enjoyed so much when I was a teacher there. It is still a very special place to me, and maybe you will see me there sometime, playing Scrabble with Fujioka-san. He always wins, both because he’s very skilled but also because I’m usually very jet-lagged, so if you see me, please help me!
私の家族の何人かは東京にいます。ですから時折テマセックを、そして藤岡さんを訪ねることができます。私が教師をしていた時にとても楽しかったテマセックの居心地のよい、家族的な雰囲気は今もテマセックにあります。テマセックは私にとってすごく特別な場所です。そして多分、藤岡さんとスクラブルをしている私を見ることがあるしょう。そんなとき彼はよく勝ちます。それは彼にスクラブルのテクニックがあるからなのですが、もう一つは私がたいていひどい時差ボケだからなんです。ですからもし私を見たら、どうか助けてくださいね！

This is Karen from the class in year 2000. All thanks to Boss who still
keeps in touch with everyone that I get the chance to write something in this blog. I lost a lot of my proficiency in Japanese since I last had picnic and hiking sessions with some Temasek students in 2000.
2000年にテマセックで教師をしていたカレンです。ボスがこれまで連絡を取ってくれていたお蔭で私はこのブログを書く機会を得ました。テマセックの生徒さんたちとピクニックやハイキングに行って以来、日本語に接する機会がなく、日本語の能力はすごく落ちています。

Recently, I  just quit my job with Panasonic and took some small trips during this break. I went to Sabah (East Malaysia) to support my sister and my boyfriend who took part in the 100km Mount Kinabalu run. We also did a small basic camping trip with a local company. I’m not sure if you would like it because the water for bathing and brushing your teeth is chocolate-colored. It’s safe but an unusual color indeed!
最近、私は働いていたパナソニックを辞めました。そして、空いた時間で小さな旅行をしました。キナバル山100キロ走に出場した妹と彼を支えるため東マレーシアのサバ州へ行きました。そして地元の仲間たちと簡単なキャンプ旅行をしました。私には皆さんが好きになれるかどうか分かりませんが、水浴や歯を磨く水はチョコレート色です。その水は安全なのですが、本当に異常な色なんです！

After Sabah, I went to Siem Reap (Cambodia) for the 4th time. I go there every 2 years- it’s like my personal pilgrimage. I’ve always love this part of IndoChina as the people are really nice. Of course, I still take a lot of pictures of Angkor Wat and the temples. Oh yes, I managed to find a horse-riding place and we took the horse for a sunset walk. So, now I’m back, I’m missing vacation again. I think I should find a job first….
サバ旅行の後、4度目となるカンボジアのシェリムアップへ行きました。2年に一度行っていますが、これは私にとって聖地巡礼のようなものです。私はインドシナのこの地が好きです。それはここの人たちがとても素敵だからです。もちろんアンコールワットや他の寺院の写真を今もたくさん撮ります。そうだ！今回、乗馬ができるところを見つけ、馬に乗ってサンセットウォークに出かけました。帰国した今、また休暇が恋しくなってきました。でも、次の仕事を見つけるのが先ですよね……

Work life in Japan had been full of ups and downs. Due to the poor economic condition, I was in and out of job several times. But I love Japan and wanted to continue working here, at the same time help out at the church I go to. Finally by God’s grace, I was blessed with my current job at a university in Osaka.
日本での仕事はアップダウンがいっぱいありました。景気があまり良くないため、私は仕事を数回かわりました。でも、私は日本が好きなので、ここで仕事を続けたいと思っていますし、同時に私が行っている教会を手伝いたいと思っています。今現在、大阪にある大学で働いていますが、神様の恵によって祝福されていることを、ようやく感じるようになりました。

I’m working at the language lounge of this university and my job includes helping students improve their communication skills by chatting with them in English (and sometimes Mandarin), creating language games to help students learn English in a fun way, not forgetting planning events and outings for the students from time to time. I really love this job though it can be very tough and challenging sometimes. Nonetheless, it is fulfilling watching students improving in their language skills, at the same time maturing into responsible adults.
私は大学の言語ラウンジで働いています。私の仕事は学生たちと英語で、時には中国語で話すことによって、彼らのコミュニケーション技術の上達を手助けしたり、楽しく英語を学べるようなゲームを作ったり、イベントの計画も立てます。そして、時には校外へ出かけることもあります。この仕事は時に大変骨の折れる、難しい仕事ですが、私は大好きです。学生たちの言語能力が上達し、それと同時に責任感のある大人に成長していく姿を見るのは大変やりがいがあります。

I spend most of my free time hanging out with my crazy bunch of fun-loving church friends and helping out at church. Our church’s singles group had a retreat to Mt. Rokko recently. It was a refreshing experience, both physically and spiritually. I love going to the nature because that is where I can feel God the closest and hear HIM the clearest.
自由な時間のほとんどは教会の楽しいことが大好きな愉快な仲間たちと過ごします。そして、教会のお手伝いもします。最近、教会の独身者のグループで六甲山へ保養に行きました。ここでは精神、肉体両面でフレッシュできました。私は自然の中に行くのが好きです。なぜなら、そこでは神様を最も身近に感じ、そして神様の声をはっきりと聴けるからです

I do not know how long I will continue to stay and work in Japan. I’m currently trusting my life to God and following where HE leads me. But while I’m still here, I wish I’ll have the chance to see everyone, my former students, at Temasek again. Till we meet, take care!

After 2 years in Kobe, I stayed in Shinjo (Yamagata) for about 1 year, and 3 months ago, I found myself in Japan again, this time Yokohama!
2年間の神戸の後、山形県の新庄に1年ほどいました。3カ月前、また日本に戻ってきました。今度は横浜です！

So far, life here has been enjoyable. My company is within walking distance from where I stay, which in turn is only a short 10-minute train ride from the main Yokohama station. While work can get very hectic at times, I have very understanding managers who always try to fulfill my requests. Most importantly, I am glad to have had a few visits from my loved ones in Singapore, as well as chances to meet up with my friends living in Tokyo, thus making my life in Yokohama far from lonely!
横浜での生活は今までのところ楽しいです。会社は、横浜駅から電車で10分のところのある私のアパートから歩いて行けるところにあります。仕事は時間によってはとても忙しいです。でも、私の上司は理解があっていつも私の要望を受け入れようと努力をしてくれます。シンガポールから最愛の人たちが来てくれましたし、東京に住んでいる友達にも会う機会があります。そんなわけで横浜での生活は全然寂しくはありません。

Life couldn’t have been more exciting than embarking on the life of a cabin attendant. Ever since the completion of a fulfilling job as an English teacher in Temasek Language School in 2008, I found yet another interesting job. I must say I’m really very fortunate.
キャビン・アテンダントとしての生活を始めて、これほどのエキサイティングな生活はないと思います。２００８年にテマセック外語学院で英語の講師として充実した仕事を終えて以来、私はまた素晴らしい仕事を見つけました。私は本当に幸運だと思います。

Life as a cabin attendant seems like a glamorous job to all on the outside, however it is not as easy as it seems. The merits are indeed uncountable. I get to travel to major cities all over the world, have free lodging, taste exotic food, and buy affordable branded goods. What a life!
外から見るとキャビン・アテンダントの仕事はとても魅力のある仕事に見えると思います。でも、それほど易しい仕事ではありません。いい面はもちろん数えきれないほどあります。世界中の大きな都市に行けて、無料でホテルに泊れて、エキゾチックな料理を食べられて、ブランド製品を買えるようになって、夢のような生活です！

However, as I just started out on this job, I haven’t got to taste the success of my fruits yet. There are still many things to learn and absorb on this journey. There are 3 most important things that one must keep in mind throughout your life as a cabin attendant; they are your “Please”, “Thank You” and “Sorry”. As a junior crew and newbie, I have to eat the humble pie, be pro-active and inquisitive.

しかしながら、この仕事を始めたばかりの私にとって、まだ仕事を成し遂げたという成果を味わってはいません。まだまだ沢山の学ぶべきことがあり、この道程での吸収すべきことがあります。キャビン・アテンダントとしての仕事を通して、心に留めておかないといけない三つの大切なものがあります。それは「どうぞ」、「ありがとう」そして「ごめんなさい」です。新入りのキャビン・アテンダントとして、慎み深く、率先して行動し、さらに研究熱心でなければなりません。

I feel that one of the biggest challenges in this job is dealing with your crew (the people whom you work with). Contrary to common belief that passengers are difficult to handle, crewmembers are much harder to work with at times. For instance, if you get a senior who keeps pin-pointing your mistakes and puts you down, at the end of the day, you will feel lousy and work performance will be affected. But if your crew is willing to teach you and be patient with you, you will be able to learn and benefit from this nice senior. Generally crew are nice people, just one or two black sheep in the lot.
私が思うには、この仕事において、もっとも大きな挑戦は一緒に旅をするクルー・メンバーとうまくやっていくことです。乗客の相手は難しいとよく言われていますが、一緒の便に乗っているクルーメンバーとの関係の方がもっと難しいようです。たとえば、先輩から重箱の隅を楊枝でほじくるようにミスを言われ、やり込められたら、その日の終わりにはみじめな気持になり、仕事にも影響してきます。でも、その日のクルーが新人キャビン・アテンダントの指導に熱心で、我慢強く接してくれたら、先輩から学ぶことができるし、恩恵を受けられます。概してクルーはいい人ですが、中に一人か二人、そんな意地悪な人がいるようです。

As I’m nearing my 1^st month of flying, I’ve already gone to places like Shanghai, New Delhi, Auckland, Moscow and Houston. There are still many places, which I hope to visit and explore. Meanwhile, I have to work hard and do well in my job as well. Hope to fly to Japan someday to visit you all!
最初の１カ月近くのフライトで、上海やニューデリー、オークランド、モスクワ、そしてヒューストンへ行きました。そして、まだまだ沢山の行きたい所があります。と、同時にもっと一生懸命働き、よりよい仕事をしたいと思っています。いつの日か日本に飛んで、皆さんに会える日を楽しみにしています！！

Hmm…my wedding…what shall I write? Well, looking back, if there are 3 words to describe my feelings then, it would be “ Ecstatic” “Grateful” and “Relieved”.

Ecstatic because that was the most beautiful and significant day of my life; I married my best friend and confidante. Grateful because we had so many friends, especially friends who flew from Japan and Thailand to specially attend our wedding. I’m grateful for the love and friendship which made the wedding even more wonderful! Relieved, because it is finally over, and Sean and I can truly begin our journey as a married couple.=)

The days leading to the wedding were extremely hectic; not only did we have to cope with our day jobs, the wedding preparations, but also, the renovations for our new house. (Yippee!) The wedding day was divided into 3 sessions- the traditional gate-crashing by the groom and his “brothers” followed by the tea ceremony in the morning, the wedding solemnization in the evening, and finally, the banquet dinner at night. The day was gorgeous with bright, warm sunshine, not too hot, not rainy, just Perfect. (^_^)

With the help from our families and close friends, the wedding went smoothly. I think the wedding was extra special because Sean and I put in a lot of effort preparing for it, and we tried, as best as we can, to add in special touches that reflected our interests and personality. We spent many days and nights creating the photo montages, the cards and decorations for the wedding. I spent over a month folding 1000 cranes and stringing them up to use as the stage backdrop. The result was pretty amazing! =) We love love love the photos!

It was an emotional day for my parents as well…my dad teared on a couple of occasions. He must be too happy that his “overaged” daughter is finally getting married!! Haha.

Seriously, I already miss having them around. Now that I have a family of my own, I have to be responsible not only for myself, but for my husband and pet dog niko-chan too! But I’m really excited about this new stage in my life!!

We’re now busy with the renovations of our new house, and we expect it to be ready in a week’s time. Yay!! Then we’ll slowly add more furniture and accessories to make the house a Home. We’re looking forward to that. =)

This year, we welcome the year of the Rabbit. Coincidentally, both of us are staying together with a pet rabbit, Togo-kun who belongs to our housemate, Akiko-san.

We always look after Togo-kun whenever Akiko-san goes on business trips, feeding him his favorite cabbage, dry fruits and changing his water. Recently, we managed to get closer to Togo-kun and he even allows us to carry him! Apparently, Togo can understand 3 languages!

It’s our first time living with a pet rabbit and we have since learnt about some special traits of the cute and fluffy animal from Akiko-san.

1.Rabbits don’t like to take a shower.
2.Rabbits have poor eyesight and they usually recognize people based on smell.
3.When Togo is happy, he makes a “fuu..fuu..” sound and the tip of his ears curl a little! (that happens when we carry him sometimes.)
4.Rabbits reproduce really fast, hence Togo doesn’t have a partner.
5.Rabbits are “crepuscular”, meaning they are most active in the twilight hours of both sunrise and sunset.

It’s definitely nice and comforting to have a pet in the house, especially when we get to hug and play with him after a day’s work. He feels like the baby of the family and apparently we are the 3 “okaasans” .
